The mock up is a model, an illustration or a collage describing an idea.
At the beginning of the design process, the mock up is mainly made through the use of photomontages, created with photos of existing situations, products or services combined with other elements.
During the next phases the mock up get more and more realistic, till they become real prototypes representing the main features of the project.

1st SOURCE BANK
In 2004 1st Source Bank hoped to increase the number of branches in its system 50% in a short period of time. The potential expansion prompted the bank to examine how it might change the customer experience before it invested in building new branches; this gave the development team permission to explore radically new service concepts. The team used mock-ups of the new banking concepts to simulate routine banking activities, testing solutions that support bankers in building relationships with their customers and bridge the gap between routine banking and episodic activities.
